Overview
Pepper Tree was a humble workers cottage built during the late 1880s as part of a larger farm in the Breede River Valley. 100 years later, the South African Heritage Resource Agency declared the cottage a National Monument on the Western Cape Heritage Site.

Today it still retains its outer clay walls and Palmiet ceiling, beneath the brand solder and thatched roof. A reed wall protects a simple outside shower, while a stone hearth provides the centrepiece for fireside evenings.

The cottage has an intimate ambience, with a traditional open fireplace that is graced with a small Queen Ann wood stove. There is a queen-size bed dressed with crisp white linen. The room has an en-suite bathroom and fully equipped kitchen opens out onto a veranda and fragrant herb garden.

Braai facilities with seating areas are shaded by the Pepper and Blue Gum trees, offering beautiful views of the mountain and nature reserve.

"Lovely little cottage"

"We enjoyed our stay in McGregor and the Pepper Tree cottage. Although the flies and mosquitoes were really annoying - but there is even a mosquito net for the bed. Very small cottage and quite dark but lovely in summer with the beautiful succulent garden and outside shower. Fully equipped kitchen but bring your own wood and fire lighters."

"Very well appointed Chalet, ideal for rest & relaxation. Has definitely retained the "call back the past" look of a workers residence in the 1800s. A fantastic Chalet well furnished for two people with adequate cutlery/crockery and all other needed requirements. One leaves the unit upon departure feeling relaxed and very satisfied. Wonderful back area for lounging or braaing."

"Top marks for this lovely relaxing little cottage. The little details and care that has been taken with this slice of heaven is quite apparent. The biggest plus for this place however is the caretaker - Evie. Nothing was too much trouble for her, and we could even use her as a babysitter while we were at a wedding at Temenos. What a jewel - and my 4 year old boy misses her already! If we are ever in the area again we would love to visit Peppertree again. Mounds of soft, fluffy white towels; lovely bedding, mosquito stuff (including a net and various ointments); gorgeous old fireplace and beautiful view. They are busy building a new fire-pit which when finished will just add to the lovely ambiance.Highly recommended!"
